Whangarei volunteers help rid beach of invasive weeds.
Staff from our Whangarei office partnered with the Bream Head Conservation Trust to help clear weeds from the Ocean Beach car park and walkway.
In an effort to facilitate the natural recovery of the dunes and assist in revegetation the Trust has a five year plan to manage invasive weeds which include the exotic ice plant, buffalo grass, poplar, bamboo, lantana and German ivy.
Other than some very deliberate and well planned weed spraying, the majority of the plan is reliant on the community to assist with weeding.
Blessed with the most pleasant day; full sunshine and a light Northland breeze the Whangarei team were happy to put in some blood, sweat, tears and hard yakka.
By 11:00 am the organiser Melissa said they had already done more than was expected for the whole day. She was very pleased with the result and extremely grateful.
After a full day of weeding the team enjoyed a BBQ and a dip in the sea. A great day was had by all.
