Sustainability

At Gallagher, we believe sustainability is about how we protect New Zealand’s future. We recognise that there is a strong link between our people, communities, environment and economy.

We aspire to balance the effects of our business decisions with our actions, and aim to be environmentally restorative, socially just and economically inclusive.

To fulfil our aspiration, we have identified four key areas which are integral to our business and which we are focused on to make a positive difference:

1. Our people: Being an employer of choice

Our people are the heart of our business. With offices throughout New Zealand we employ around 900 insurance professionals, and are dedicated to enabling our team to be the best they can be.

We foster a safe, equal and inclusive culture, and empower team members to grow and make a difference. Our employees can access a range of learning and development opportunities. We also run our own performance and recognition programme that recognises excellence in advice and outstanding service, celebrates local success, and promotes activity that personifies our company values.

We have a focus on supporting future generations. Through our Early Talent Programme we provide young talent an opportunity to hone their business skills in a real world environment, and set themselves up for career success.

For two consecutive years, we have been named as one of New Zealand’s ‘Top Insurance Workplaces’ for 500+ employees by Insurance Business NZ.

2. Our communities: Building strength and resilience

We’re passionate about helping our communities be better off. When the communities we operate in thrive, so does our business and the country as a whole.

Our teams across the country are regularly involved with local clubs, and lend a hand to many different projects. From providing support to hospice, running fundraising drives and mucking in with tree planting, it’s about making a positive contribution locally. All Crombie Lockwood employees get a 'volunteering day', and have the opportunity to boost fundraising efforts through a donation matching programme.

We work closely with the New Zealand School Trustees Association. For 20 years our support of the Trustee Study Awards scholarship programme has enabled members of boards of trustees in Kiwi schools to pursue further study and development. Awarded annually, the programme seeks to recognise the commitment that school trustees make to New Zealand’s education system. The scholarships are designed to be of significant benefit to each recipient, their community, school and to the trusteeship in general.

3. Our environment: Caring for nature

We strive to mitigate the environmental impact of our actions. We're dedicated to protecting and conserving our country’s unique biodiversity, which is an important part of our identity as New Zealanders.

We are an official partner of Save the Kiwi. This partnership established the Gallagher Kiwi Burrow, a dedicated kiwi incubation, hatching and brooding facility, which is helping to save kiwi from extinction.

4. Our economy: Securing prosperity

Economic success is intrinsic to a healthy and sustainable society. We strive to support a strong economy by helping New Zealanders to flourish financially through better risk management. We aspire to do this by providing uncomplicated, transparent and meaningful advice, and finding innovative solutions to better meet New Zealanders’ needs.

It is our mission to financially position our clients to survive any insurable event. As part of this we support our clients from policy inception right through to claims.

We have a claims team available 24/7 who are dedicated to supporting our clients to get a fair result, and who also assist underwriters in streamlining the claim process.

Throughout our business operations we maintain high standards of compliance and corporate governance, including managing our network with tight SOX compliance.

Our global perspective

These four principles reflect our local commitment, however we are also guided by the principles established by our parent company Gallagher.

These are set out in The Gallagher Way, a document written in 1984 to underpin the ethos of the business, and which remains the foundation for the ethical behaviour expected in everything we do. All employees are called upon to embody these principles and are also frequently reminded of their commitment to live by those values.

Each year every Gallagher employee reviews and commits to a Global Standards of Business Conduct. This describes our obligation to conduct ourselves in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.

This commitment has seen Gallagher recognised for the ninth consecutive time in 2020 as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute, a global leader in defining and advancing the standards of ethical business practices.
