Liability insurance

liability1 v11

Product liability insurance

Product liability insurance protects against claims of personal injury or property damage caused by products sold or supplied through your business.

Could you afford to meet the cost of a compensation claim if your business was sued and you didn’t have cover?

Product liability insurance is usually included in your public liability policy and is essential if you sell, supply or deliver products to members of the public.

What does product liability insurance cover?

Product liability insurance covers unexpected and unintended personal injury or property damage arising from products that are manufactured, sold, supplied or distributed by your business

Typically, product liability covers:

  • compensation payments for third party injury or even death
  • repair or replacement costs, for damaged property or possessions
  • medical treatment or an ambulance call out
  • legal expenses, while you’re defending any of these claims.

Specific areas of cover include:

  • Liability arising out advertising products or services, such as copyright infringement or defamation
  • Damage to property within the custody of the business, including customer and employee property
  • Damage caused by software that you supply
  • Injury caused by equipment or packaging that you supply
  • Illness caused by food, beverages or vitamins that you supply
  • If arranged specifically, the policy can also cover some of the risks posed by product exports to foreign jurisdictions including the United States and Canada

If your goods are deemed to have caused loss, injuries or damage to land or property then you’re covered.

We also provide solutions to cover product recalls and product contamination. Contact our brokers to discuss your business risks. We will work with you to create a liability insurance package that fits your business.

CLAIM EXAMPLE

Fertiliser manufacturer

A fertiliser manufacturer supplied the wrong compost to a horticulturist for a specialised crop. The compost supplied burnt the crop’s young seedlings and the entire crop was lost and with it the year’s projected income. The products liability section of the fertiliser manufacturer’s policy responded favourably to the claim.
