Thoroughbred insurance

We have proudly supported the New Zealand racing industry for over 20 years. When you talk to us, you can be assured that we know insurance as well as we know thoroughbreds and racing.

With years of experience and a passion for the racing industry, our dedicated brokers can arrange the right cover for your racehorses and breeding stock.

They can also provide advice and ongoing support with your equine insurance needs. team provide support and advice that goes beyond a standard insurance policy.

What thoroughbred insurance covers

We can look after your insurance needs for your broodmares, foals, stallions or yearlings.

We can arrange insurance for racehorses from when they start training until their retirement. Cover is available for horses from 30 days up to and including 13 years of age.

Specialised cover can also be arranged for horses over 14 years of age on application. Contact us for a quote and to learn more about the options.

SOLUTIONS AND OPTIONS FOR THOROUGHBRED COVER

Basic mortality cover

  • Risks of mortality cover includes death or destruction on humane grounds due to accident, sickness or disease.
  • Limited cover for theft as per policy wording.
  • Cover for all transits within NZ and Australia, and transits between these countries.

Foal insurance

Foals can be insured from 24 hours of age with an acceptable vet certificate and IgG.

Foetus insurance

Foetus cover can be placed from 42 days after last date of service with acceptable proposal and vet / pregnancy certificate acceptable to the underwriters. Talk to us about your specific cover requirements.

First season sire insurance

We offer cover on first year stallions entering the breeding shed. This covers first season sires against infertility due to congenital reasons and not a result of accident, sickness or disease.  

Fall of hammer cover

At the fall of the hammer, all risks to the horse immediately transfer from the seller to the buyer. There are many hazards that can endanger your horse between purchase and its safe arrival home. We encourage our clients to contact us and arrange for fall of the hammer coverage, prior to attending sales.

Insurance proposal forms

Completed proposal forms can be returned by email to bloodstock@ajg.co.nz or by post to PO Box 1395, Waikato Mail Centre, Hamilton 3204, New Zealand. 

Vet certificates

  • Vet certificates required for any horse valued at $100,000 and over.
  • Vet certificate for stallions must make specific reference to the genitalia (if stallion has Permanent Disability Extension).

Complaints process

If you have a complaint, please let us know by contacting your broker. We will refer your complaint to the New Zealand Lloyd’s General Representative who will investigate further and aim to resolve your concerns.

If Lloyd’s cannot resolve your complaint, you can access the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) scheme. The IFSO scheme resolves complaints about insurance and is free, independent and entirely confidential.
