Protecting New Zealand in partnership with Trees for Survival

At Gallagher, we’re passionate about protecting what matters most to Kiwis and supporting causes that are close to our heart.

Our commitment goes beyond insurance, giving back to initiatives that enhance and restore our land and communities. Since 2022, we’ve been a proud principal partner of Trees for Survival, a charitable trust that works with schools and local communities across New Zealand to plant native trees and promote environmental awareness.

The Trees for Survival environmental education programme provides an opportunity for schoolchildren to make a practical difference to their environment as well as learn about conservation, revegetation, wetland restoration and protecting stream quality.

"Trees for Survival has a purpose to engage the next generation in restoring the environment"
– Sally Clegg, Trees for Survival

Planting the seeds of environmental awareness

Trees for Survival Programme Manager, Sally Clegg says that having support from Gallagher as a principal sponsor gives them the comfort that they can continue to expand the programme. “We’ve got such a long list of schools that want to join. Some schools have been with us for 30 years, so we know that when we take on a school, we take them on for life!”

Sally says they’re seeing more children who feel anxious about climate change. Being involved in the Trees for Survival environmental educational programme helps them feel a sense of tangible, positive contribution by understanding the impacts of their tree planting. “These kids feel that they're their trees because they've had them as seedlings, and they've potted them and then watched them grow to a plantable size. So it’s that sense of ownership for the kids as well, which I think is an important difference.”

"The kids can tell the stories of what it was like on that particular planting day."

Inspiring the next generation of kaitiaki

Gallagher Sponsorship and Sustainability Manager, Cam Castle, has visited schools, seeing first hand how students nurture seeds in their provided shade house in preparation for planting. He says that last year, Trees for Survival planted over 146,000 trees, an increase of around 30% from the previous year. The support doesn’t stop there though, as a number of Gallagher team members have also got their hands dirty, getting involved with planting and supervision on planting days.

Supporting Trees for Survival is another way we can contribute to building a sustainable future for New Zealand. Alongside our Trees for Survival partnership, we also support Save the Kiwi, another cause that remains close to our heart, as we strive to make a positive difference to our community.

"Thank you to all the Trees for Survival facilitators and all of the school representatives for pulling together such an awesome programme and you can really see the genuine impact that’s happening around New Zealand."
